Mark Allen, Director
Mark is a fully qualified PGA Professional and an ASQ qualified coach and during his PGA qualification Mark gained a distinction as part of his coaching module. Mark is also a qualified practitioner of the mental game and holds a PGA certificate in Golf Psychology Coaching.After having turned professional in 2003 he played on the Sunshine Tour, PGA Europro Tour, Challenge Tour and various mini tours with four professional tournament wins. Mark continues to play in PGA North Region events finishing 2nd on the Assistants Order of Merit in 09.
Welcome to the first in a series of tips from PGA Professional and Mind Factor Coach, Mark Allen:
Extra Distance off The Tee
Everyone wants a little extra distance from the tee. The chance to hit that drive past your mates or to reach that long par 4 that previously has been out of reach.
To generate extra distance you need to increase your club-head speed without losing control of the swing. This is done by creating torque in your core area (lower back and stomach).
Torque is created by turning your shoulders 90 degrees when the club is at the top of your swing but only turning your hips 45 degrees at the same point. When at this point you will feel that your body is wanting to pull your arms back down and you should have a feeling of tension in your back and stomach, if done correctly you will not be able to hold this position for very long due to the tension created in your golfing muscles.
How Do I Get Into This Position?
To get into this position I recommend you start by firstly, at address pointing your front foot as close to the target as possible, this will give you a stretching feeling through your knee and hip but will more importantly resist how much you can turn your hips on the backswing.
Finally, to get a full shoulder turn I recommend you concentrate on turning your lead shoulder under your chin. At the top of your swing your lead shoulder should be under your chin and behind the ball as you look down.
A word of caution......
This new move will put more strain on your back. Therefore I strongly recommend you go through a good warm-up routine prior to trying out your new swing.
