Unfortunately Ian Poulter faltered over the weekend after joint leading at Sawgrass after the first with Martin Laird and finished 3 under tied 25th. Laird though held on to his good start and finished at 11 under, 2 shots behind the winner Matt Kuchar in second. The best placed Englishman was Luke Donald who finished on 9 under in 6th place, not enough though to regain the Worlds number 1 slot.

Ian Poulter and Martin Laird are the first-round leaders at seven under in the Players Championship in Florida. Poulter’s round of 65 was his best round at Sawgrass and he knows about being at the top of the leader board at Sawgrass as he was runner-up there years ago to Swede Henrik Stenson. While Laird had a bogey free round he beat his best ever score at Sawgrass by 5 shots! Who will come out on top England or Scotland?

Luke Donald regained the number 1 spot!

Luke Donald has regained the number 1 spot from Rory McIlroy by coming third in this weekend Zurich Classic. The points are so close between them, only 0.22, that they could be swapping places this season regular basis. The number 1 spot has changed hands 9 times in the last 18 months. Donald was 2 shots behind Ernie Els and Jason Dufner who needed to go into a playoff before Dufner took the title.

Michael Hoey wins the Hassan Trophy in Morocco

Michael Hoey from Northern Ireland won the Hassan Trophy in Morocco this weekend by 3 shots. This is only Michael’s 4th win from 151 European starts and this win puts him in contention for a Ryder Cup place. Hoey started the final day 2 shots off the leader Jamie Donaldson from Wales but Hoey shot another round of 65 to Donaldson’s round of 70.

Woods wins the Arnold Palmer Invitational

The Roar of the Tiger can be heard again. Woods won the Arnold Palmer Invitational this weekend by 5 shots from Graeme McDowell, making this his first win since September 2009 , 2 ½ years ago. This win will send shudders through the field of The Masters in 10 days time as finally Woods seems to be getting his game back to the one that has already won him 14 majors. This win has moved Woods to 6th in the world, and it wasn’t that long ago he was out of the Top 50.

Luke was only off the top spot for 2 weeks thanks to his 4 way playoff win at the Transitions Championship in Florida on Sunday. Luke will take the next 2 weeks off to prepare for The Masters and to have a win under his belt will give him more confidence as he looks for his first major win.

Justin Rose’s fourth USPGA tour win at the WGC Cadillac in Miami has shot the Englishman to 7th in the world rankings. This win matches Tony Jacklin and Luke Donald for number of wins in the USA, with only Nick Faldo achieving more wins in The States. Rory McIlroy was 2 shots behind Rose finishing in 14 under, and has decided not to play another tournament until The Masters. This is a clear signal to the rest of the field that he is taking The Masters seriously and hopes he doesn’t have the same fate hit him as it did last year.

Robert Rock won his biggest professional career tournament in Abu Dhabi at the weekend by holding off joint overnight leader Woods and a surging McIlroy. Rock got off to a storming start by birdieing 3 of the first 6 holes leaving woods Woods 3 behind after 6 holes which is where he finished. Rock won by only a shot from McIlroy who started the day 2 behind but shot a -3 compared to Rock -2. Rock won £291,646.

Tiger's back....almost

Greg Chalmers won his home Open by shooting 69 in the final round of the Australian Open edging his compatriot John Senden by 1 shot but it was the man 2 shots behind that the world of golf were focused on Tiger Woods in Sydney yesterday.

Tiger shot a final-round 5-under 67, but said two bad tee shots on his back nine had cost him a shot at forcing a playoff with Chalmers. He can be happy that he was in contention on the back nine of a tournament for the first time in a long while and his third place finish sees him climb back into the top 50m in the world ranking and halt the slide that’s been going on all season.

Woods now joins his USA teammates against Captain Greg Normans International team in The Presidents Cup this week in Melbourne.

Kaymer storms to second seasons win

Martin Kaymer birdied 9 of his last 12 holes yesterday closing with a 9-under 63 to win the WGC-HSBC Champions. Kayemers feat was the biggest comeback ever in a World Golf Championship Tournament.

Kaymer started his final round 5 shots behind Fredrik Jacobson, in a pack of star and current major champions, but this just seemed to focus him and ran off four straight birdies at the start of the back nine at Sheshan International. This meant the German finally caught Jacobson with a birdie on the 13th, and then killed off the challange with key birdies on the final two holes.

This second European win of the season moves Kaymer to number 2 in the world and pushes him to number 2 in the race to Dubai rankings behind Luke Donald and one place ahead of Rory Mcllroy who changed place with Lee Westwood in the world rankings to sit at number 2 his highest positon so far.

Sergio Garcia; one of the best ball striking and most talented golfers of his generation made it two in a row in Spain to climb back into the top twenty of the world rankings by winning the Andalucía Masters on the Valderrama course in Sotogrande

It’s hard to imagine that Garcia is still only 31, from his debut in 1999 this likeable Spaniard has been one of the golfer expected to win in any field, but not so much in the last couple of years when his game seemed to have deserted him as he slipped down the world rankings starting this season outside of the top 50 in a for him lowly 78th position

Garcia also now leads the European Ryder Cup points which as a huge supporter of the European team and a very experience player on the US PGA Tour must make past playing partner and Ryder Cup captain José Maria Olazábal very happy as he plans for a years’ time in Chicago.

Victory for the European ladies at Killeen Castle this weekend makes it a hat trick of team wins for Europe against the USA over the last 12 months. The European Ladies pulled off a surprising 15 points to 13 win against the USA which ended a run of 3 consecutive defeats. The Europeans went into Day 3 singles all square at 8 points each, and though gifted a match by Cristie Kerr as she had to pull out through injury the rest of the team went on to win 6 points out of the remaining 11 matches. This follows the men’s victory at The Ryder Cup and the men’s amateur’s victory at the Walker Cup.

The $10m prize money unfortunately did not go to a Brit but was won by Bill Haas in a 3 hole playoff with fellow American Hunter Mahan. Haas pared all three hole with Mahan bogeying the third to hand the tournament and the cheque to Haas. From the British pair, Luke Donald missed out on the playoff by 1 shot and finished Tied 3rd on 7 under and Rose tied 20th on 1 over.

B&I victorious in Seve Trophy

GB&I beat Continental Europe this weekend at Saint- Nom-La-Breteche by 15½ points to 12½. GB&I got off to a flying start on Day one by wining 4 out of the five fourball matches to lead 4 -1.

Day 2 Continental Europe came back to win 3½ - 1½ in Fridays fourballs to end the first 2 days with GB&I only 1 point ahead at 5½ - 4½.

Day 3 saw GB&I take the morning session of 4 matches playing Greensomes 3½ - ½ and in the afternoon foursomes again GB&I came through winning 2½ - 1½.

Going into the final day of singles GB&I were looking for 3 points out of the 10 matches but when Continental Europe took the first 5 matches to square the tournament at 11½ points each the GB&I team needed to stop the flow. Match 6 was halved between Nicolas COLSAERTS and David HORSEY keeping the match all square at 12 points, with Scott Jamieson in match 7 winning by 1 hole and Ian Poulter in match 8 sinking a birdie on 18th to give GB&I a 2 point lead. GB&I were looking for a ½ point out of the next 2 matches and was secured by Mark Foster’s win by 1 hole. GB&I won 4 points out of 5 in the last 5 matches after that shaky start.

As the players teed up for the BMW Championship on the PGA Tour at Cog Hill on Thursday more than half the field on Sunday would leave Cog Hill disappointed as out of a field of 70, 40 would be eliminated as only the top 30 go through to the next stage and final of the FED EX Cup.

Justin Rose came into the competition ranked 34th in the FEDEX Cup standings and by winning has moved himself up to 3rd and more importantly has sealed his place at next week's Tour Championship finale at East Lake in Atlanta and a chance to win the $10m prize money.

Rose entered the final day 4 shots ahead of his nearest rival which rose to 5 on the front nine but had been reduced to just 1 shot by the time he got to the 17th and stood over a chip for birdie, the ball tracked towards the hole never looking like missing and Rose went on to his 3rd win on the American tour finishing with an even-par 71 , for a two-shot victory.

In other FedEx Cup news Webb Simpson remained at No. 1 ,Dustin Johnson stayed second, Luke Donald held onto the No. 4 spot and Matt Kuchar dropped from third to fifth, but for all of these players with the points being reset means that winning the $10,000.000 is in their hands next weekend.

GB&I win walker Cup

Great Britain and Ireland's won a famous victory over the USA to win the Walker Cup for the first time in eight years and for only the eighth time in the history of the Walker Cup. GB&I won the contest 14 points to 12, having gone into the final day 10 ½ to 5 ½ up on the USA. England's Tom Lewis who shot to prominence when he led after the first round of the Open in July only claimed one-and-a-half points from a possible four, and lost both of his singles matches, including a 4&2 defeat by Russell Henley to end his amateur career.

After Rory McIlory finished third in the KLM Open in The Netherlands this weekend it has moved McIlroy up from 4th in the World to 3rd replacing Germanys Martin Kaymer. So now Great Britain holds the top 3 slots with Luke Donald at number 1 and Lee Westwood at number 2, who finished 5th in The Netherlands 4 shots behind another Brit Simon Dyson.
