Buying Guide: Putting Together a Basic Golf Kit

Along with a new found enthusiasm of golf comes the need for a kit to play till your hearts desire. Although you can borrow clubs at most golf courses having your own personal set will be better for your game because you will have the correct size and weight clubs. Then of course there are the golf balls to choose, tees to pick and a whole range of accessories to purchase.

The Clubhouse

For the golfing beginner a set of clubs is the first piece of essential kit, you will need various different types of club for different shots. Starting from the top the first club you will need is a driver, sometimes called a fairway wood, to take the initial shots down the fairway and drive the ball towards the green.

A set of irons are an essential investment, they will make up the core of your clubs. Used for various different shots including hitting onto the putting green and hitting out of the rough. An iron is a versatile club the ranges from 1 to 9 depending on the angle you require for your shot. A 1 iron typically being used for long shots through to a 9 iron club which is used for shorter shots; the clubs in between covering a range of distances.

A wedge is an advisable club to have, they are used for short accurate shots where you would like to control the exact distance of how far the ball travels. They also have a degree of variance depending on the shot that is required, most commonly used to hit the ball onto the green after the initial tee shot.

And we finish up on the green, hopefully, where a putter will be needed to help coax the ball into the hole. The putter is designed to help the ball roll over the grass in a controlled manner towards the hole.

The best place to store your golf clubs would be a purpose made golf bag, a stand bag is ideal for the golfer who carries his clubs but doesn't want to lay the bag down on the ground. Nevada Bob's stocks golf bags for women golfers and junior golfers. For older golfers there is a range of electric golf trolleys that would mean not carrying the bag from tee to tee.

Having a ball

Of course once you have the clubs and the bag you need golf balls!

To start with you could use practice balls, they behave like recreational and advanced golf balls but are made out of plastic which is ideal for the junior golfer.

For use on the golf course there are two main types of golf ball the recreational golf ball and the advanced golf ball. The recreational golf ball is for the golfer with a lower swing speed, lower in price and is fine for the golfer with a swing speed of under 80mph, advanced balls have a greater spin but require a faster swing in order to get the full benefits of this golf ball. If the golfer is not physically strong enough to compress the ball it will not travel as far!

Tee Time

And where there are golf balls there are golf tees!

A golf tee is an essential piece of kit for the golfer, it is used for the first shot to increase trajectory and distance. There are 2 basic types of golf tee wooden and plastic in varying lengths. The advantage of the wooden tee is that it has a smoother base for the ball to sit on than a plastic tee and they are a cheaper option. Although perfect for the traditional golfer, they don't last as long as they can be broken by a powerful shot.

Plastic golf tees are the more expensive option but they are a good long term investment because they don't break when struck by a particularly powerful shot.

The gloves are on

The last piece of essential kit would be a golf glove, worn on the left hand for right handed golfers and on the right for left the added grip means that the ball can be hit harder and helps prevent blisters. Nevada Bob's has a wide range of golfing gloves for all golfers from juniors to women, lined with moisture wicking material these gloves provide maximum comfort and grip.
